The city of Greeley was one of the earliest planned towns to be established in the United States. It was given its name after Horace Greeley, a newspaperman from New York who advocated for young Americans to “Go West.”
Downtown Greeley
The central business district is home to an increasing number of high-quality eateries, breweries, and coffee shops. The Greeley Stampede is a tradition in northern Colorado that has been going on for almost a century and features rodeos, concerts, and other forms of entertainment. The AgriCULTURE Fest and Feast is held in August and is a celebration of the agricultural heritage of the community. The city also hosts several other signature events. Downtown Greeley and the areas that surround it play host to a variety of events throughout the year. The area has been designated as a Colorado Certified Creative District. The monthly art stroll that takes place on the First Friday is a favorite of both locals and tourists. In addition to the beautiful parks that include lakes, streams, waterfalls, and islands, the city is home to more than fifty works of public art that are dispersed around the area. Centennial Village Museum
Visitors from all over the world come to see the exhibits at this museum. On a total area of five and a half acres, the museum comprises a variety of historic buildings, including dwellings, a church, a schoolhouse, and other buildings. These buildings range in age from before the settlement of the land to the early 20th century. It is recommended that you schedule a trip to the town just to check out the village because it is open from April until October. You can also go to the historic house that was once owned by Nathan Meeker, who is considered to be the founder of the town. Meeker was instrumental in bringing the first Union colonists to the region so that they could realize their dream of establishing a western utopia with tree-lined streets that were large enough to accommodate a fully loaded wagon.
University of Northern Colorado
In addition, Greeley is the location of the University of Northern Colorado, which was initially established in 1889 as the State Normal School (for the purpose of providing teacher education). However, the university is now widely regarded for the quality of its business, performing arts, and nursing programs. The university is known for bringing in a wide variety of guest speakers and artists who contribute to the cultural scene. Every year in the spring, the town comes alive with excitement as it hosts one of the largest jazz festivals in the country.
Fort Vasquez
You may also get a decent flavor of what life was like in the area before Westerners permanently colonized it by visiting Fort Vasquez, which was built in 1835 and is located on Highway 85 between Denver and Greeley. In addition, the Colorado Model Railroad Museum is a true marvel that draws people of all ages who have a passion for trains to see its working model railroad as well as more than 600 relics that are connected to the railroad industry. Watch as the miniature train cars move through a layout that spans 5,500 square feet and is surrounded by thousands of handcrafted details as they make their way along the track.
